You can find lots and lots of blogs and articles about all the questions to ask all of your wedding vendors from venues to florists to caterers. But, what should you ask when interviewing an officiant?
There’s just less information out there about hiring an officiant, so we created a comprehensive list of questions to ask officiants when you’re interviewing her/him. We’ve included our thoughts and answers to these questions also.
Are you available on my wedding date?
This is probably your first question. Don’t forget to ask if s/he is also available on the date you are planning your rehearsal if you would like your officiant to attend your rehearsal. This may be your first question, but the following questions are equally, maybe more, important than this one.
Are you legally authorized to perform wedding
ceremonies in my state?
Every state has different requirements. Kentucky and Indiana has no restrictions. Ohio requires the officiant to register with the state to receive a license to solemnize marriages. Our whole team of officiants are licensed in the State of Ohio to solemnize marriages.
What types of ceremonies do you offer?
Your officiant may be better able to answer this question if you have a bit of an idea about what type of ceremony you’d like to have. Couples often say they want something a little less traditional, non-religious, or short and simple. These mean very different things to each couple. Your officiant should ask you more about what you want than what they do.
Can we customize our ceremony?
We will customize every aspect of your ceremony. We’ll help you write your own vows if you wish. We’ll create a custom unity ritual or add a handfasting. We can incorporate you favorite poem or song lyrics. And, you don’t have to just choose from options we present. We have a process to draw out your creativity to customize the ceremony that is authentic to you.
How do you work with couples to create a personalized ceremony?
We offer a complimentary meet and greet for a couple to ensure that we are the right officiant to work with for their wedding. We require a deposit to reserve your date and begin drafting your ceremony. We will plan an initial planning session to learn about your vision and begin the planning process. The initial plan will be to get the creativity flowing and begin a draft. Future meetings and communications will construct and finalize the ceremony.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Tracy and Sam bought a house in February 2022. We began renovations the day after we closed. In the demolition, we found hate speech behind the walls. The house was in worse condition than we anticipated. Our renovation costs went well over our budget and timeline. We started officiating weddings to help pay for the renovation costs we had not budgeted. We see this small business as helping us bring love to a house filled with hate and sharing our love with other couples.
What types of customers have you worked with?
We have worked with a diversity of couples. We have performed weddings for non-religious, Pagan, Christian, interfaith, and other spiritual couples. We have done weddings in churches, mansions, cemeteries, gardens, barns, parks, the Bengals stadium, a private airfield and a Vegas wedding chapel. We offer services for quick elopements, short and sweet services, or big event weddings.
What advice would you give a customer looking
to hire a provider in your area of work?
Your officiant should get to know you and learn about your love story. Do not accept the services of an officiant that will offer a boiler plate service in which s/he will just change the names. Your love is too unique and your commitment is too important to do what everyone else does.
